86 Cents

86 Cents is a series of works with imagery and text on fabric. The phrases emblazed across the pieces are prison slang used within prison society. The vernacular often trickles out through urban music and finds its way into every day language.

The title, 86 Cents, is a nod to the average amount of money per hour paid to people who are incarcerated for their work. The work is often for private companies who profit off the slave labor of individuals who are incarcerated through a loophole in the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
