Watch Me Rise Up

Watch Me Rise Up

Video artwork collaboration between artist Phil America, Director of Photography Giovanni Solis, and musician Eren Cannata with content of Black Lives Matter co-foudner Patrisse Culors. The video art uses audio and video shot during Los Angele’s largest protest led by Cullors during the summer of 2020 as part of the movement for Black lives. The multi-channel sound installation is made entirely of sounds recorded during the protest and the video uses Phil’s often-used red and cyan colors as well as LL Grey, a typeface by Swiss type designer Aurele Sack.

The work is an ode to the black lives lost since George Floyd who was murdered by the police in America. The title of the work, Watch Me Rise Up, is taken from a line in one of George Floyd’s, known in rap music circles as Big Floyd, songs.

The work was sold to the California African American Museum(CAMM) in Los Angeles and the proceeds were donated to Black Lives Matter organization.
